Needs, methods and opportunities for research.
A seminar organised by the PEER network (Partnership for European Environmental Research) with participation of the European Commission.
Environmental technology contributes to sustainable development by protecting the environment while contributing to socio-economic growth. The key issue in environmental technology development is to identify promising technologies while taking into account all life cycle stages of the product or service, from raw material extraction to disposal. Due to the holistic nature of environmental technology, concepts of eco-efficiency, life cycle assessment (LCA) and eco-design are all needed in the successful creation of environmental technologies. Integrated assessment of technological scenarios, using tools such as LCA, is a promising way to support eco-design and lessen humans’ environmental impact.
The PEER network aims to contribute with its partners to the development of a European Research Area in the environmental sciences, by integrating a broad range of disciplines to provide science-based support for the development of a sustainable Europe.
In this context, the PEER Environmental Technology seminar was organised in order to:
- Identify potential research needs related to environmental technology development , such as environmental indicators for assessing eco-tech impacts, the resilience of environmental systems to external impacts, etc.
- Identify and share experience, knowledge, methodologies and tools available within research and evaluate how these competences can help in assessing environmental issues within the context of FP7.
- Deal with technology and its links to general environmental problems, as well as focusing on some specific technologies and their application to selected issues (e.g. solid and water waste management, environmental restoration and remediation, renewable energy, landscape and sustainable agriculture management, etc.).
