Environmental technology contributes to sustainable development by protecting the environment while contributing to socio-economic growth. The key issue in environmental technology development is to identify promising technologies while taking into account all life cycle stages of the product or service, from raw material extraction to disposal. Due to the holistic nature of environmental technology, concepts of eco-efficiency, life cycle assessment (LCA) and eco-design are all needed in the successful creation of environmental technologies. Integrated assessment of technological scenarios, using tools such as LCA, is a promising way to support eco-design and lessen humans’ environmental impact.
The PEER network aims to contribute with its partners to the development of a European Research Area in the environmental sciences, by integrating a broad range of disciplines to provide science-based support for the development of a sustainable Europe.
